Self-hypnosis is being taught to mothers-to-be in Lancashire to find out whether it can play a role in pain control during pregnancy and child-birth.
This will be a 2 year study conducted in Blackburn and Burnley by the University of Central Lancashire.
A specialist in midwifery, Professor Soo Downe, said that local women had indicated their interest for the project.
She said that “There is evidence that hypnosis can reduce anxiety and this reduction can lessen pain.”
This seems to be supported by Prof Whorwell’s pioneering work with IBS and how self-hypnosis has helped IBS patients manage their symptoms.
Around 800 women who have reached 30 to 35 weeks pregnant will learn self-hypnosis in addition to the standard level of care.
