Belgian researchers have identified a positive impact of using hypnosis during some surgical operations. Combined with local anesthesia, hypnosis can help healing and also lessen drug intake as has been confirmed by anesthesiologists.
The particular surgical procedures studied were for breast cancer surgery and in thyroidectomy. They noted that in their initial study, 18 out of 78 women used hypnosis for various breast cancer surgical procedures. The remaining women who had the same operations were given general anesthetic.
Whilst patients using hypnosis were a few minutes longer inthe operating theatre, their use of anesthetic significantly reduced. Also, their hospital stay was shorter.
In the second study aroun thyroid surgery. Again it was noted that drug us and hospital stay time was significantly reduced in the group who has hypnosis and local anesthetic over the group who had general anesthetic.
The researchers observed that there were no differences in the effectiveness of using hypnosis in any sex or age group. They suggested that the combination of hypnosis and local anesthetic could be used in other surgical procedures.
The findings of this research was presented at the European Anaesthesiology Congress in Amsterdam in June 2o11. Study author and professor Fabienne Roelants and co-author Dr. Christine Watremez
